Our Mission The mission of the Economic Development Commission is "to provide services to enhance the town's economy and to expand opportunities for individual, business and community prosperity. The Commission will strive to promote equity, and improve the quality of life for Sprague citizens."
The SEDC is comprised of seven appointed volunteers and meets the 4th Wednesday of every month in the Town Office building on the 2nd floor. In 2004/05 The SEDC completed a strategic plan for redevelopment of all three villages in Sprague, with emphasis on Baltic Village, a classic New England mill town . . . and according to the National Register of Historic Places, “one of the best preserved examples of a 19th Century New England mill town in the region.” The Plan has been used in a number of plenary documents and funding requests as the foundation for Sprague’s future economic and social growth. Sprague is a member of SCCOG, seCTer, 1000 Friends, and coordinates with CERC and the RDC on a regular basis. 10000 Friends of Connecticut is a statewide citizens’ organization whose mission is to promote and shape growth and to ensure a prosperous economy, a healthy natural environment, and distinctive, integrated and attractive communities that will promote opportunities in education, housing, transportation and employment for ourselves and future generations. CT Smart Growth is a BLOG that provides a way for grassroots community groups, state-wide organizations, sympathetic elected officials, and policy experts to come together to share information . .By linking efforts and knowledge, we will be better able to promote and shape land use decisions to ensure a prosperous economy, a healthy natural environment, and distinctive, integrated and attractive communities while promoting opportunities in education, housing, transportation, and employment for ourselves and future generations. The Connecticut Housing Program for Economic Growth offers financial incentives and technical assistance to municipalities t. that zone for and allow more compact, mixed-income housing development. The HOME Connecticut program encourages towns to develop in a more compact way, to help affordability and conserve land. The Southeastern Connecticut Enterprise Region (seCTer) is a public-private regional economic development agency serving the towns of New London County Connecticut. Its mission is to promote and preserve the region's attractiveness, to encourage new businesses, and to assist and to nurture existing and expanding local enterprises. It has a comprehensive web site that provides potential investors and companies with town-specific information on economic opportunities, available properties, industry resources, etc. Sprague is a member of seCTer’s Business Development Committee. The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (SCCOG) is a public agency with representatives from twenty towns, including Sprague, and formed to provide a basis for intergovernmental cooperation in dealing with a wide range of issues facing Southeastern Connecticut. The Council was organized in October of 1992, taking over the mission of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Planning Agency (SCRPA), which had been existence since January 1961. The Connecticut Economic Resource Center is a nonprofit company funded primarily by utility companies with a mission of promoting Connecticut as a competitive business location. It specializes in economic development, research and marketing for local, regional, state and utility economic development entities. It often provides technical assistance to municipalities such as Sprague in the areas of strategic planning and economic feasibility studies of specific town-owned sites. In carrying out its mission the Connecticut Rural Development Council provides coordination and serves as a catalyst for collaboration among organizations.
