Park and Recreation Department

As you travel through Sprague stop in each Village and check out all of the scenery, which the Garden Club has enhanced with their boxes of seasonal plantings.

Each village has its own unique places to visit.

Baltic has a playground that is handicapped accessible with a double picnic table. You can have an old fashioned skating party with a bonfire on Pine Pond. Those who do not wish to skate may walk on the new track. We also have a Gazebo to sit in on hot nights to feel the cool breeze off the water and listen to concerts put on by local people. On bright summer days you can walk around the Reservoir and watch the wildlife.

Hanover has a lot of great cemeteries. They also have a great playground for the children, and the oldest post office in Sprague, established on May 17, 1866. (Lewis Saxton, Post Master).

Versailles originally was called Eagleville. In 1871, S.L.and T.D. Sayles bought the Vers Woolen Mill in Eagleville and called it the Vers-Sayles Woolen Mill. This is perhaps the origin of the name Versailles. On May 13, 1872, the name of the Post Office was changed to Versailles. The scenic little villages are so closely spaced that anyone who likes a good hike could make the "Grand Tour"an enjoyable part of their visit to Sprague!

Indoor Soccer is “running” right along and has been a huge success for the local children.  We hope to promote more sporting events like this and keep the local children occupied with healthy and enjoyable activities.

Penguin Plunge

On February 18, the SPARC gang will be taking a “dip” in the frigid Long Island Sound to help raise money for Special Olympics.  We all felt this was a great charity and would like to do our part to raise some funds for future Special Olympians. Please log onto the Special Olympics website and click on Penguin Plunge, follow the link to Ocean Beach and find our team the Shivering SPARCS. Visit the site and feel free to join our team.  If you won’t take the plunge, come on down and cheer us on!

Big S Yard Sale

We are in the final planning stages of putting on…THE BIG “S” YARD SALE.  Yes, you heard right, Big “S” Yard Sale.  Of course, the “S” is for SPRAGUE. This will be an open yard sale available to anyone or group with items to sell. There is a nominal fee to purchase space and or a table/booth. We are planning on having the BIG “S” YARD SALE on Earth Day (April). There will be notices in the Our Town, local papers and yes, even flyers. This should be quite an event. Tables will be available for rent, or you can reduce the space rental cost and bring your own. (SPARC will be coordinating the space rental and advertising-more information to come). Concession stand will be open and run by SPARC. Bring an appetite.

SPARC Web page

Our page in under construction and we are excited about adding a calendar that will contain dates for SPARC events and listing of sports groups that reserved the ball fields.  We want to ensure that there are no conflicts of schedules and are asking that all sports teams and leagues contact Sprague’s Park and Recreation Committee directly for scheduling your season games and practices. We also want to ensure that the fields and building are kept maintained and cleaned.

We are also adding to our Web page SPARC’s meeting minutes and agenda.
