Our Mission

The mission of the Economic Development Commission is to provide services to enhance the town's economy and to expand opportunities for individual, business and community prosperity.  The Commission will strive to promote equity, and improve the quality of life for Sprague citizens.

Sprague is a member of the Southeastern Regional Council of Governments (SCCOG), the Southeastern Connecticut Enterprise Region (SeCTer), 1000 Friends, the Southeastern Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority (SCRRA), and coordinates with CERC and the Rural Development Council (RDC) on a regular basis.

Strategic Plan 2009-2014: The Town is in the process of revising its Strategic Plan to build upon accomplishments achieved as outlined in the 2004-2014 Plan and address the last five years of the plan with these accomplishments in mind, that have further refined the direction in which the Town has decided to head.

Economic Gardening: an entrepreneurial alternative to the traditional method of towns trying to merely attract large industry, pioneered by the city of Littleton, CO.  This development model is useful for small communities, in that it advocates a n individualized and personal relationship between an economic development body and each business in a community. The Connecticut Housing Program for Economic Growth offers financial incentives and technical assistance to municipalities that zone for and allow more compact, mixed-income housing development.  The HOME Connecticut program encourages towns to develop in a more compact way, to help affordability and conserve land. www.homeconnecticut.org

The Southeastern Connecticut Enterprise Region (SeCTer) is a public-private regional economic development agency serving the towns of New London County Connecticut. Its mission is to promote and preserve the region's attractiveness, to encourage new businesses, and to assist and to nurture existing and expanding local enterprises.  It has a comprehensive web site that provides potential investors and companies with town-specific information on economic opportunities, available properties, industry resources, etc.  Sprague is a member of seCTer’s Business Development Committee.  www.secter.org

The Southeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (SCCOG) is a public agency with representatives from twenty towns, including Sprague, and formed to provide a basis for intergovernmental cooperation in dealing with a wide range of issues facing Southeastern Connecticut. The Council was organized in October of 1992, taking over the mission of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Planning Agency (SCRPA), which had been existence since January 1961.  www.sccog.org

The Connecticut Economic Resource Center is a nonprofit company funded primarily by utility companies with a mission of promoting Connecticut as a competitive business location. It specializes in economic development, research and marketing for local, regional, state and utility economic development entities.  It often provides technical assistance to municipalities such as Sprague in the areas of strategic planning and economic feasibility studies of specific town-owned sites. www.cerc.com

In carrying out its mission the Connecticut Rural Development Council provides coordination and serves as a catalyst for collaboration among organizations. Its goal is to preserve the rich heritage and unique physical, economic and social qualities of life in rural Connecticut.  It offers technical assistance in the areas of participatory planning and community coalition building in order for towns to reach unified decisions regarding development and growth. www.ruralct.corg
